Mickey Mouse turns 85

Mickey Mouse looks dang good for an 85-year-old rodent, right? Not a gray hair to be seen. Disney fans mark his birth with the release of "Steamboat Willie," a black-and-white cartoon directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.

The Central Florida tourism industry has grown up with Mickey. As Walt Disney said, "it all started with a mouse." Mickey was almost 43 when Walt Disney World opened in 1971.

But 1928 is certainly a bygone era. Figure skater Sonja Henie won her first Olympic gold medals, Amelia Earhart made her first transatlantic flight and the original Boston Garden opened.

Other 1928 births: musicians Fats Domino and Bo Diddley, TV star (and Rollins College alum) Fred Rogers, hockey great Gordie Howe, child star Shirley Temple, singers Burt Bacharach and Rosemary Clooney, artist Andy Warhol, Disney Legend Richard M. Sherman — and one other mouse, named Minnie, who also debuted in "Steamboat Willie."
