With Disney app, make this Election Day an educational one by learning more about presidents

Orlando Sentinel

You have a choice this Election Day. If the U.S. presidential election is as close as the pundits say it will be, you can teach your children about voter disenfranchisement, Florida voting debacles and provisional-ballot lawsuits.

Or you go a different route and try something decidedly more upbeat and teach your kids about the lives of U.S. presidents instead.

If you choose the latter over the former, Disney Publishing has just the new iPad app for you. Called “Disney American Presidents: Unofficial Oval Office Scrapbook,” the app gives users a unique insight into our nation’s leaders throughout its history.

The app is designed for kids in grades 3 to 8 and even is tied to national social studies curriculum standards, too. Designed as an interactive scrapbook, “Disney American Presidents” features animation, cartoons and real-life testimonials from well-known names from the comedic (Mo Rocca) to the serious (Gen. Wesley Clark). It’s based on the award-winning educational video series “The American Presidents” from Disney Educational Productions.

The app, which was developed by the Disney Learning team and a producer from “The Daily Show” and “Colbert Report,” allows users to spend time in the Oval Office, flip through the scrapbook and learn more about the presidents of years past and even our current leader. The presidents’ decisions and legacies are highlighted in personal stories of their time in office. The accounts are sometimes humorous, sometimes serious and always informative.

“Disney American Presidents” is available for the iPad for $3.99 and can be found in the App Store.
