For the adventurous, outdoors-y types, take in fall foliage at its best by camping and canoeing on the Housatonic River.
Getting There: Housatonic Meadows State Park camping area has toilets and showers, though showers shut down after Oct. 9. Sites have picnic tables. No alcohol or pets in campground. Cost is $13 a night, plus a $3 walk-in fee the first night. Campsites are first-come, first served after Oct. 1. Telephone is 860-672-6772. Food and camping supplies are available in Cornwall and Kent. The park is located along Route 7 approximately 2 miles north of the intersection with Route 4 and approximately 3 miles south of the West Cornwall Covered Bridge.
Canoes can be rented at Clarke Outdoors in the village of West Cornwall. Weekends are $55 a day, with shuttle service to launch site at Falls Village and pick-up at Housatonic Meadows State Park, which is south of the campground. Shuttle service is not available south of the meadows pick-up spot, but those interested in paddling farther to Kent could leave a car at the finish site.
