Have you already had enough of the frigid weather? Are you ready for a tropical break? Well, grab the kids and head north for an educational and beautiful adventure! Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory is located in historic Deerfield, Massachusetts which is just a short drive from the Connecticut border. Walk through the entrance to the indoor garden and become enveloped in a lush, warm environment. "It is sort of an oasis," says owner George Miller, who grew up in New York City. "Not too many butterflies in Brooklyn," laughs the fairly new enthusiast, as he gazes upon his four thousand precious pets. "It's very relaxing," he says. "I come in here at six o'clock in the morning and it is just me and the butterflies. It's a very calming, soothing effect."

The conservatory, which is kept at 80 degrees and 80 percent humidity, has become an eco-system of sorts with birds, rare plants and butterflies all living in harmony. The nursery shows visitors the amazing metamorphosis of these incredible creatures: from an egg, to a caterpillar, to a chrysalis which finally becomes a gorgeous butterfly. "When you see that transformation from what it was to what it is now, I thinks that's the amazing thing about it," says Miller.

The conservatory also features other kinds of wildlife. Tortoises munch on salad while a bearded dragon delights visitors by crawling up and down the arm of an employee.

If you're lucky, your view of a butterfly could be up close and personal! "It's kind of a special magic to have a living creature land on you," says Jessica Tardiff of West Virginia. Both of her sons were graced with the flutter of a butterfly! "It tickled," giggles four year old Benny.

The conservatory is located at 281 Greenfield Road in Deerfield. It is open seven days a week from 9am 'til 6pm. Admission costs $12.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors, $8.00 for children ages 3 through 17. Toddlers under 3 get in for free.

"It's a very unique experience," says Miller.
