Every few weeks, Mother Nature creates a showstopper in the sky. So, the owner of a Rowayton kayak shop decided to take advantage of this monthly spectacle. DownUnder Kayaking provides Full Moon Paddles for a few nights each month, May through September. Visitors say, it's an experience they will never forget.
The paddle begins in the calm waters of Five Mile River. Anyone at any skill level can take part in this 3-mile excursion. After just a few minutes, paddlers enter Long Island Sound with views of beautiful waterside homes and Green Ledge Lighthouse. Halfway through the trip, the guides stop at Fish Island where paddlers can take a rest and walk the grassy shore. At this point, the orange, glowing moon makes it's stunning appearance on the horizon.
"You experience the beauty of being outside during a full moon and seeing the water look amazing," says Louisa Lima, manager of DownUnder Kayaking. She urges visitors to put everyday worries aside: "It really is about coming out and enjoying it and relaxing!"
Paddlers jump back in their kayaks and literally spend the rest of the trip enveloped in darkness. Senses are heightened by the melodic waves and the shimmering shadows of the moon on the water.
"It's almost like meditation," says Lima. "You feel so at peace, you really get lost in it."
This experience reminds visitors to live in the moment and appreciate our place in this enormous galaxy.
There are only a few more Full Moon Paddles this year. August 24th and 25th from 7:30pm-9:30pm and September 23rd and 24th from 7:00pm-9:00pm.
