Pass David Colvin's home office on Old Saybrook's Boston Post Road and you'll see a big pontoon vehicle bearing the words "HydroBike Tours"! Colvin, who has lived on Connecticut's beautiful shoreline for his entire life, is a personal trainer and natural body builder. He was using these floating bikes for client therapy when he realized he had another business brewing. Now, he provides tours, which last about an hour and a half, to anyone willing to sightsee by bike! "They're very fun, fast, safe and stable. I have clients from age 80 to age 6 who come out and take tours with me!"
He starts the expedition in an estuary that leads into Long Island Sound. Along the way, visitors can admire wildlife, such as goslings and snowy egrets, and also try their luck at crabbing. Colvin utilizes the "spot and scoop" techinique to snag some male blue crabs for lunch.
The pontoon bikes, which have been around for ten years, offer a smooth ride, forwards and backwards. Colvin says this activity provides a great workout.
Visitors eventually enter Harvey's Beach, an especially gorgeous spot at low tide. Colvin has taken his HydroBikes all around the area for adventures to Groton Long Point and even Fisher's Island.
This DayTrip proves that there are always new ways to appreciate the Sound, one of Connecticut's most special gifts.
