Part of a series of mini-reviews of Chicago-area hotels.
In just five years, The James Chicago has established itself as one of Chicago’s most popular hotels, blending stylish luxury with notes of whimsy. Look no further than David Burke’s Primehouse, the renowned chef’s outpost here in the Midwest. Here, Burke’s more fanciful concoctions (cheesecake lollipops, Kobe corn dogs) are paired well with executive chef Rick Gersh’s more serious, upscale take on steaks (Hello, dry-aged rib-eye!).
The rest of the hotel echoes that sentiment. Thanks to a partnership with Monique Meloche Gallery and art partners, artwork covers The James, including in guest rooms, which are in light and dark earth tones with contemporary furniture and stunning, slate-tiled bathrooms. If you can, book a loft suite, which includes a media room with projection TVs and built-in Bose surround sound.
Those looking to work out the kinks can head down to The James’ cavernous, 2,000-square-foot fitness center or the Spa by Asha, with its three treatment rooms and relaxation lounge.
If all that doesn’t leave you ready for bed, then visit JBar, the hotel’s sleek lounge. An “it” spot for years, JBar offers great cocktails and a dance floor that should be packed by midnight.
