Germany’s Oktoberfest is hardly the only reason to visit Europe in the fall.

With the exception of Munich during its 18-day festival, most continental destinations are less crowded and less expensive in autumn, with the added bonus of mild weather.

New museums and attractions highlight the traditional season of culture in these three European capitals:

Amsterdam

All of Amsterdam, with its narrow, centuries-old canal houses, looks like a museum. But most of its museums don’t look like Moco, the city’s year-old Modern Contemporary Museum Amsterdam (mocomuseum.com), at least on the inside. This champion of street art — think Banksy murals — resides in a 1904 townhouse on Museumplein.

One of Amsterdam’s most popular museums, the Anne Frank House (annefrank.org), where the teenager wrote her famed diary while hiding in an attic from the Nazis during World War II, is being expanded. New exhibits aim to provide more context on the war, and the museum remains open throughout the redesign.

Delft-inspired tiles and colorful botanical prints distill the Dutch term gezellig, or cozy, in the 274 rooms of the Kimpton De Witt hotel (kimptondewitthotel.com), new to the central Canal Ring. Its House Bar concentrates, fittingly, on gin, and guests can pick up a bouquet of tulips from the courtyard flower shop.

Between its busy airport and its bustling sea port, Amsterdam is a continental hub. Come and go on a seven-night Rhine River cruise aboard the new 158-passenger AmaKristina from AmaWaterways, cruising between Amsterdam and Basel, Switzerland (from $2,049 a person, amawaterways.com).

London

London is most certainly Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. But don’t let the antique trappings mislead you. English tastes run high to low — Shakespeare to Sacha Baron Cohen — and nowhere do these twain meet more than in the capital.

Trippy rock band Pink Floyd gets the gallery treatment at the Victoria and Albert Museum (vam.ac.uk) through Oct. 1. That makes way for the 20th publishing anniversary of the Harry Potter book series, saluted in a wizarding exhibit at the British Library (bl.uk), Oct. 20 to Feb. 28.

When it opens in the West End theater district in November, the musical “Hamilton” (hamiltonthemusical.co.uk) will join other American exports in London this year. New York chef Marcus Samuelsson just opened a branch of his fried chicken-focused restaurant Red Rooster (samuelssongroup.com). And actor Robert De Niro, chef Nobu Matsuhisa and partners opened the Nobu Hotel Shoreditch (nobuhotelshoreditch.com) with a sleek Nobu restaurant in the hip East End district this summer.

London can be a pricey place to lodge, but the pop-up Good Hotel not only claims one of the best locations in the city — floating on a Thames River barge — but a rooftop lawn and relatively affordable digs starting around $100 (goodhotellondon.com).

Paris

The City of Light has been anything but dimmed by the terrorist attacks of 2015.

“It’s the same vibrant, beautiful city with better security,” said French native Colombe McCarthy, director of the Europe division of Destinations & Adventures International. “Parisians seem more welcoming and appreciative of visitors than ever before.”

Salute French style at the new Musee Yves Saint Laurent Paris (fondation-pb-ysl.net) opening in October in the late designer’s original Right Bank couture house.

On the food front, the Gare du Nord station, terminus of the Eurostar high-speed train, is newly home to Le Chocolat Alain Ducasse (lechocolat-alainducasse.com) and the brasserie L’Etoile du Nord (letoiledunord.fr) from Michelin-starred chef Thierry Marx. Walk off the calories via the new “Bread Wars” audio tour from Detour (detour.com) covering the battle between the traditional baguette and tasty upstarts.

The first treaties between France and the United States were signed in 1778 in what is now the Hotel de Crillon. The opulent hotel reopened this summer after four years of renovations (hoteldecrillon.com). If you don’t want to break the bank, share a room with one mate or up to six and save your euros at the new Yooma Urban Lodge, where doubles start around $115 (yooma-hotels.com).
