There may not be a better way to see the state than from the water, and plenty of inexpensive, boat trips let you catch beautiful scenery and sunsets and miles of picturesque shoreline from the Connecticut River or Long Island Sound.
Most of these day cruises are available May through October. Schedules vary. Reservations are recommended.
On a boat ride around the Thimble Islands, you may hear the legend that Captain Kidd hid from pirate hunters on one of the hundreds of islands clustered here off Branford's shore. While there's no way to know if the story is true, a boat trip in this area of Long island Sound is a fun experience. Boat tours of the Thimble Islands depart from the Stony Creek Town dock. The Sea Mist II offers 45 minute tours; prices are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors and $6 for ages 12 and under. Information here.
Narrated tours aboard the Volsunga IV last 45 minutes. Prices are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors and $6 for ages 12 and under. Information here.
The Islander offers 45-minute cruises around the islands. Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for those 12 and under. Information here.
