FOX led Tuesday night's ratings once again, but the opening-night returns for new series "Glee" didn't quite live up to the show's advance hype.
ABC led the night among households with a 10.1 rating/16 share, but FOX, 9.7/15, brought in more total viewers -- 16.91 million to 15.99 million for ABC. CBS finished a strong third at 9.3/15. NBC, 3.0/5, was well off the pace in fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.3/2.
FOX easily won the adults 18-49 demographic with a 6.3 rating. ABC came in second at 4.0. CBS, 3.2, took third, followed by NBC, 1.5, and The CW, 0.9.
The Adam Lambert- Kris Allen showdown on "American Idol" scored a 13.2/21 for FOX at 8 o'clock. The season finale of "NCIS," 10.1/17, put CBS in second. ABC snagged third with a repeat of Monday's "Dancing with the Stars" performances, 5.4/8. "Most Outrageous Moments" came in fourth for NBC, beating out the 1.2/2 for "Reaper" on The CW.
The "Dancing with the Stars" finale, 11.7/18, moved ABC into the lead at 9 p.m. "The Mentalist" concluded its season with a 10.5/16 on CBS. "Glee" lost a little more than half of its "Idol" lead-in and finished with a 6.2/9 for FOX (it also dropped from its first half-hour to its second). A " Law & Order: SVU" rerun kept NBC in fourth, while the season finale of "90210" on The CW drew a 1.5/2.
"Dancing with the Stars" increased to 13.5/22 at 10, and while that was the night's best household rating, the show didn't quite beat "Idol" in total viewers -- "Idol" had 23.07 million at 8, and "Dancing" had 21.6 million at 10. "Without a Trace" finished its season with a 7.4/12 for CBS, and a second "SVU" drew a 4.6/7 for NBC.
