The comic/movie giant has already set an April 2010 release date for the sequel to the summer's biggest hit, while Variety says that original director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. are close to deals to return.
Online reports last week said that Favreau's return was essentially a done deal and it would be hard to imagine the franchise moving forward without the leading man who generated such positive buzz.
In all, "Iron Man" has already earned more than $314 million domestically and more than $252 million foreign, an impressive start for Marvel's first self-financed film.
Theroux is best known for his acting work in films including "Mulholland Dr." and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," plus TV appearances on "The District," "Alias" and "Six Feet Under."
He co-wrote the summer's upcoming comedy "Tropic Thunder" and made his directing debut last year on the indie "Dedication."
