The latest PBS miniseries by professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. ("America Beyond the Color Line"), this documentary finds the noted Harvard scholar exploring the title theme by probing the backgrounds - and commonalities - of many of the residents of Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico and Peru.

Among the many interesting statistics Gates reveals: how relatively few Africans, headed for the New World at the time, ultimately arrived in the territory now known as the United States. **** (Not rated: AS, P)
