Emmys Name Finalists for Top Series
'Family Guy' makes comedy cut, 'Wire,' 'Mad Men' in drama running
For the first time, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has released a list of the 10 top vote-getters for outstanding drama and comedy series, as voted on by the full academy membership. The 10 shows in each category will be pared to five nominees (barring any ties) when nominations are announced next month.
The lists include usual suspects like "The Office," "House," "Two and a Half Men" and "Grey's Anatomy" along with a few surprises. The biggest of those is probably "Family Guy," which decided to compete for best comedy rather than best animated series this year and made the cut. HBO's cult favorite "Flight of the Conchords" is there too.
Missing is "Desperate Housewives," which was seen as a strong contender for best comedy after a well-reviewed fourth season. CBS' "How I Met Your Mother," NBC's "Scrubs" and "My Name Is Earl" and ABC's "Samantha Who?" also failed to make the cut.
On the drama side, cable networks not named HBO made major inroads, grabbing four of the 10 spots with AMC's "Mad Men," Showtime's "Dexter" and "The Tudors" and FX's "Damages." HBO was also represented with "The Wire."
NBC's "Heroes," a best drama nominee last year, won't be this year. Neither will "Battlestar Galactica," which will have one more shot next year for the second half of its final season.
The next step in the nomination process is a series of "Blue Ribbon Panel" screenings this weekend. The results of those panels will be averaged with the academy-wide vote to determine the five nominees in each category. The Emmy nominations will be announced July 17.
Here are the 10 finalists in each category:
