Democratic Senator Karen Tallian from Portage asked a committee to examine Indiana's marijuana laws. A State Senate Committee supports Tallian's request.
Tallian said she wants the committee to make recommendations about possibly legalizing marijuana.
The bill's sponsor said she's concerned about the money spent to enforce marijuana laws across the state.
Representative Tom Knollman, a legislator with multiple sclerosis, supports the bill. He told his peers that medical use of marijuana should be considered.
Knollman said he's spent up to $25,000 a year on pain medication that often doesn't work.
Several states have already passed laws decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana. Many of those same states have also created programs for medical marijuana.
Tallian said legalization could save the state millions of dollars.
