Mother of alleged rape victim names Muncie Community Schools in lawsuit
An alleged rape victim's mother filed a lawsuit against the Muncie Community School Corporation and others Friday.

The lawsuit also names former Superintendent Eric King, former Central Principal Chris Smith and the mother of the suspected rapist for the November 9 incident.

The suit alleges that Smith failed to notify police, including an off-duty officer at the school that day, after the 16-year-old student told administrators she had just been sexually assaulted in a restroom.

Authorities said the girl was left sitting in the principal's office for more than two hours.

The lawsuit alleges the principal's failure to act allowed the girl's injuries to go untreated and that school officials failed to secure the crime scene. The lawsuit also said the school published false statements that the girl later recanted her story.

The suspected rapist, Steven Moore, is set to stand trial August 8.

Smith is no longer Central's principal but is still employed by MCS. He is set to stand trial on a misdemeanor charge of failing to report child abuse or neglect October 11.

The suit asks the jury to determine unspecified damages.
