An experiment at IUPUI ended with some explosive results Wednesday.

Molotov cocktails were ignited at the IFD training grounds. It's the final experiment for a group of grad students.

They've come up with a formula that can help firefighters determine if there are accelerants left behind in a fire, which could change the way these crimes are investigated.

"We want to be able to take these types of solutions that have been developed in our research at IUPUI and translate them into practice,” said Dr. John Goodpaster.

The patent pending formula helps keep accelerant samples fresh. It keeps the particles from breaking down in soil samples or other fragments found at a fire scene.
