Local Indy college teams have playoff presence

INDIANAPOLIS - The focus of a state-and frankly the nation-has been towards Lake Michigan when it comes to Indiana football.

Notre Dame's unprecedented run to their first ever BCS number one ranking has many in the state a buzz with anticipation of a national championship game for the Fighting Irish.

Also Ball State is bowl eligible and likely on its way somewhere for the new year with eight wins and a game against Miami of Ohio still to go. If Purdue can pick up a win against Indiana in the Old Oaken Bucket Game, they too could have a chance to go bowling as well.

But for fans who want their fix of college football right now, a trio of local teams is helping to make that happen.

UIndy, Franklin and Marian all have reached the second round of their respective playoffs and are in action this weekend.

Ted Karras Jr.'s Knights will be at home to face in-state and conference rival Saint Francis in the second round of the NAIA Playoffs. A win over Adrian on the road helped Franklin advance in the Division III playoffs where they will travel to face Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Thsoe teams have been in the second round before, but UIndy cannot say the same. They are in the Division II playoffs for the first time and picked up their first playoff win at home over Northwestern State last Saturday.

"They really got behind us and showed up on game day," said quarterback Chris Mills of the Greyhounds' fans who held pep rallies for the team before their first playoff game. "I'm just glad we were able to execute and get a win for them."

Now the challenge begins for UIndy to make more history as they must travel to face Colorado State-Pueblo. They are the top team in the Greyhounds' Super Region and considered by some the best team in Division II.

For the Greyhounds it means a unique practice and travel schedule since they will have to leave on Thanksgiving to make the trip.

"We don't have to do much to adjust," said senior receiver Mar'Quone Edmonds of the schedule. "I feel like we have a team of solid individuals who really want to win and they are focused and they are focused to win this next game."
