COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA—At the Conduit road home where Matthew Brady once lived, is an eviction notice on the door.
Neighbors like Grace Hackney say they hadn't seen Brady in a while. But says six months ago Brady stopped by after having back surgery.
"He asked me would I give him tylenol. I gave him the tylenol and he thanked me real nice and went back," neighbor Grace Hackney.
News of Matthew Brady's arrest involving the brutal murder of Joseph and Evelyn Bland shocked everyone in this tight knight community.
Hackney says "we were scared because we didn't know who would do that."
Matthew Brady's family wouldn't talk to us when we reached them at their home. Only saying "innocent until proven guilty."
Neighbors say Brady and his girlfriend moved into another home on Lafayette street last summer.
Just a few blocks away from the Bland's neighborhood.
They say they saw detectives camped outside the home nearly everyday after the murders.
"I didn't know what was going on, but I knew there were kids there. So, I assumed it had something to do with the kids, but I had no clue it had anything to do with the murder investigation," said neighbor Ricky Booth.
One neighbor says detectives took what looked like an 18 inch steel pipe out of the trunk of Brady's girlfriends gold nissan altima.
"They were taking pictures of it, went to the truck, grabbed a bag went back and put something in it."
He says police hauled away the car on a flatbed truck. And this neighbor tells me, he saw Brady's girlfriend leave with police.
"She came back within a couple of hours with a family member, went in the house, and got her closes and t.v. And everything like that," said Booth.
CBS 6 has learned that Matthew Brady's girlfriend works at the Chester Applebee's on West Hundred road.
The manager wouldn't say what she did or how long she's worked there.
And we've also found out that Matthew Brady has a criminal history. He was arrested in 2002 in Colonial Heights on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a minor. Later that year, Brady was found guilty of sexual battery. He was sentenced to 12 months in jail with 11 months suspended.
