Saturday proved to be a deadly day on Connecticut waterways, as two people died in separate drowning incidents.

The first drowning happened around 9:30 Saturday morning on Columbia Lake, off Sunny Slope Road. State Police say 85 year old Henry Galan, of Columbia, was pulled from the lake by volunteer firefighters. Galan was taken to Windham Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Shortly after 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Cromwell Police received a 911 call saying a man fell into the Connecticut River near the Cromwell Outboard Association boat launch.

Marine units from the Cromwell, Middletown, and Portland Fire Departments launched a search of the area. Anthony Varricchio, Jr, 50 years old, of Cromwell, was found just before 4 o'clock. He was taken to Middlesex Memorial Hospital. Attempts to revive Varricchio failed, and he was pronounced dead.

Police warn, especially as the weather gets warmer, to be careful and never venture out on water alone.
