Today marks the two-year anniversary of the death of Mishawaka police officer Corporal Jim Szuba and his K-9 partner Ricky.
A drunk driver involved in a police pursuit slammed into their squad car January 9, 2010, killing both officers.
Hundreds of officers and their K-9's from around the country attended their funeral.
Tests showed that drunk driver, 31-year-old Shawn Devine, also had opiates and cocaine in his system. A judge gave him the maximum sentence, 31 years in prison, calling his crime the worst of the worst.
Charges were only brought against Devine for Szuba's death, not Ricky's. But since their deaths, Indiana has changed the law, allowing felony charges against anyone causing a canine officer's death.
