MEDIA, Pa. (AP) - A suburban Philadelphia businessman convicted of strangling a company intern from North Dakota has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.
A jury convicted 43-year-old William Smithson of Glen Mills in November of first-degree murder, attempted rape and other charges in the death of 23-year-old Jason Kyle Shephard of Cavalier, N.D.
Delaware County said Smithson should face life imprisonment rather than the death penalty.
Shephard was studying sports marketing and took a semester off from Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., to work at Daktronics, a scoreboard manufacturer. His body was found at the home of Smithson, a Daktronics supervisor, in September 2006.
