HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (WPIX) -- Tragedy struck a Long Island day school Tuesday when police say a two-year-old girl died after choking on a piece of carrot.

According to school officials at the Carousel Day School in Hicksville, the child began to choke at 10:30 a.m. Daycare employees performed CPR on her, before rushing her to Nassau University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m.

The owner of the school, Gene Formica said students and staff are devastated over the tragedy.

"We are shocked and saddened by this tragic loss. The health and safety of all our children is our greatest concern." he said in a statement. "We are providing counseling support for our staff and offer our total support, thoughts and prayers for the child's family."

Police say a medical examiners investigation will determine the exact cause of death.
