VALLEY STREAM, N.Y (WPIX) -- A Valley Stream woman, whose body was found last month in a Dumpster, may have been killed by her own stepson, according to Nassau County police.

William Tracey, 26, was arrested Saturday night and pleaded not guilty on Sunday to charges he murdered 42-year-old Denise Tracey. He was reportedly ordered held without bail on a second-degree murder charge at First District Court in Hempstead.

According to police, William struck Denise Tracey over the head with a blunt object after the two got into a verbal altercation in the basement of their home at 41 Dartmouth St. Officers say he then proceeded to stuff her body inside a trash bin located less than a half a mile from their residence.

"There was a verbal argument in the basement, in William's Room," Homicide Squad Det. Sgt. John DeMartinis told Newsday. "She was struck multiples time in the head...and she received skull fractures."

Tracey's husband Paul, and two other sons were on the second floor of the home during the time of the incident, according to police. DeMartinis reportedly said it's "not reasonable" the other family members claim they did not hear anything.

Tracey initially told authorities he left the house around the time investigators believe his stepmother's body was dumped in the garbage bin. But detectives say a search of Tracey's room reportedly led to the recovery of "significant forensic evidence."

Tracey is due in Nassau County Court in Mineola on Wednesday.

If convicted, Tracey could spend a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail.
