Southern State Pkwy Reopened For Monday Commute
Monday's morning commute on Long Island's Southern State Parkway should be hassle-free, with no lingering effects of Saturday's falling concrete, multi-car accident.

Crews cleaned up the concrete debris and all lanes were reopened by 7 a.m. Sunday, said State Police Sgt. John Kastner. Department of Transportation engineers have been at the scene assessing the bridge, and have declared it safe for travel.

Saturday's accident occurred at about 6 p.m. at exit 27 in Wantagh. A driver lost control on the Wantagh State Parkway and skidded into the side of the overpass, sending pieces of the bridge crashing down onto traffic on the Southern State below it.

Ten cars were either hit by falling concrete, or involved in fender-benders caused by drivers trying to swerve out of the way. There were no major injuries.
