STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (WPIX) --  Firefighters battled a six-alarm brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon in the Oakwood section of Staten Island.

The flames, which began near Mil Road and Kissam Ave, were being fueled by strong winds, according to officials.  Nearly 100 acres of land was scorched in the brush fire.

People from as far away as New Jersey and Manhattan reported seeing giant clouds of black smoke.

The fire reportedly started when an abandoned house caught fire and quickly spread to multiple structures.  According to fire officials, at least three homes have been damaged in the blaze.

Thirty homes were evacuated as a precaution.

No injuries were reported.
