NEW YORK (WPIX)—The Roosevelt Island Tram is slated to shut down for six months beginning March 1, officials announced Tuesday.
The tram -- featured in the 2006 " Spider-Man" flick -- is scheduled to be out of commission until Aug. 31 for a major modernization project. The main goals are to improve rush-hour service, increase reliability, and provide better energy efficiency.
Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation President Steve Shane is urging people to familiarize themselves with alternates modes of transportation.The RIOC will provide red shuttle bus service to Manhattan as well as to Queens Plaza.
People can still access the island via buses, subways and the Roosevelt Island Bridge.
The tram runs between Roosevelt Island and Manhattan adjacent to the 59th Street/Queensboro Bridge.
