Sen. Monserrate's Girlfriend Testifies in Assault Case
The girlfriend of New York State Sen. Hiram Monserrate took the stand Wednesday in the Queens lawmaker's assault trial.

Karla Giraldo initially told authorities she was attacked by Monserrate at his Jackon Heights home in December but later retracted her story. However, during opening arguments of the trial, Assistant District Attorney Scott Kessler told a judge that the 30-year-old cried to a nurse after the fight, "My face! My face! I can't believe he did this to me."

Giraldo needed 20 stitches to repair her face, police said.

Surveillance footage shows Monserrate grabbing and shoving Giraldo as she held on to a door frame - bleeding and screaming.

Monserrate, 42, pleaded not guilty to assault charges in the incident. He is accused of smashing broken glass into his girlfriend face during a heated argument on Dec. 19.

Monserrate faces 7 years behind bars and may lose his senate seat if convicted on the top charge.
