HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (WPIX)
A Long Island man was busted under Leandra's Law for allegedly driving drunk with a 2-year-old in his car Sunday evening in Hicksville, according to Nassau County police.
Jose A. Escobar, 31, of Uniondale, was arrested by authorities after he was pulled over during a traffic stop in his 1999 Mitsubishi over around 5:45 p.m.
Authorities said Escobar was clearly intoxicated. The 2-year-old girl found inside the vehicle was released to her mother, police said.
Leandra's Law was named after Leandra Rosado, 11, who died in a car crash on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan after a minivan driven by a friend's mother who was drunk flipped over.
Escobar was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law. In addition, he was charged with endangering the welfare of a child an DWI, according to authorities.
He is slated to go before a judge Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
