LONG BEACH, N.Y. (WPIX)—Police in Nassau County have called off the search for a Brooklyn 19-year-old who drowned after an intense riptide swept him into the ocean near the shore of Long Beach.
The teen, identified as Manuel Tiburcio, was standing thigh-deep in the water with three friends when the current pulled them all out to sea. Rescuers were able to save his friends, but as of 5pm Wednesday, they couldn't find Tiburcio's body.
The Long Beach Police Department has asked the Nassau County Police Department to aid in the investigation with an accident reconstruction team.
The sunbather was flown by helicopter to Nassau University Medical Center with a fractured spine and a broken rib. His condition was unknown, but he is expected to survive.
