MALVERNE, N.Y. (WPIX)
An investigation is underway into a deadly accident on the Southern State Parkway in Malverne, Long Island. There are multiple fatalities following a one car accident that shut down all of the westbound lanes on the Southern State.
Cops say a car went off the road and into the woods between Exits 17 and 18 just before 4 a.m. and slammed into a tree. It appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed.
A number of people were thrown from the car and according to police. Authorities brought in thermal imaging cameras to search for victims.
Michael Campos who lives nearby says he heard the crash and rushed to the scene. "I saw four bodies on the floor and I went by the road, on the highway and it was slippery. It was wet like it was just raining out."
When asked what the crash sounded like Campos said, "It sounded like an airplane crash."
Cops say one injured person was taken to Winthrop Hospital. No word on the extent of those injuries or if there are other people who were injured.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
