Cops: Mom Drove Drunk With 3 Kids In Car

Ana Rios

A Long Island mother was arrested and charged Wednesday, after police say she drove drunk while three children were in the vehicle.

According to Suffolk County Police, Ana Rios, 30, of Brentwood got behind the wheel of a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer and headed west on Cypress Street in Central Islip when her vehicle careened with a parked pickup truck at around 4:30 a.m. Rios' vehicle than struck another parked vehicle across the street.

After the accident, Rios fled the scene, police said.

A Suffolk County deputy sheriff who spotted Rios' severely damaged vehicle, grew suspicious and pulled the Long Island mother over. When the officer approached the vehicle, he noticed that three children - a 7-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 2-month-old boy - were sitting in the back seat.

An investigation determined that Rios was under the influence of alcohol and she was promptly taken into custody. Her children were transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for observation.

Police charged Rios with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child in the car, a felony under Leandra's Law.

Rios is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Dec. 23.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
