Five pit bulls, two of them puppies, were seized from a Middle Island home after they were found to be living in unsanitary conditions, the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Tuesday.

The owner, identified as Victor F. Nicholas, was charged with five counts of animal cruelty and is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on April 28.

Suffolk SPCA chief Roy Gross said the puppies were found to be underweight.

The incident occurred on Nord Park Boulevard on Friday, when police and SPCA officers executed a search warrant on the property.

The dogs were taken to a veterinarian for evaluation.
