An enraged North Bellmore woman attacked her grandmother and tried to smother her with a pillow late Sunday after the 87-year-old refused to let the woman -- who appeared drunk -- retrieve her daughter, Nassau police said.

Rachelle Elliot, 23, showed up at her grandmother's North Bellmore home at around 9:30 p.m. to get her daughter. The grandmother had been baby-sitting Elliot's 3-year-old girl, police said.

"The grandmother, seeing that the defendant was intoxicated, refused to let her take the child and attempted to phone the defendant's mother, at which point the defendant ripped the phone cord out of the wall," a Nassau police report said.

"When the grandmother then attempted to use a portable phone, the defendant grabbed the phone from her hand and threw it at the victim's face, knocking out a tooth," the report continued.

Elliot "hurled the victim to the ground, physically dragged her to the bedroom, forced her onto the bed and covered her face with a pillow," the report said. The grandmother broke free and Elliot walked away, police said.

The grandmother was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries and released.

Elliot was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. She faces arraignment at First District Court, Hempstead.
