Suffolk County Community College in Selden has stepped up security after an on-campus attack Thursday which police said landed a man in the hospital.

The unidentified man suffered head injuries and was treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Suffolk police said. His condition is unknown.

School officials confirmed there was an on-campus incident but could not immediately provide specifics.

School vice president Mary Lou Araneo said police are investigating the incident.

"We have bolstered the public safety presence" on campus, Araneo said.

A Suffolk student said he witnessed the attack, and that the incident involved an altercation at about 4 p.m. in a school cafeteria in the Babylon Center.

The student, who asked that he only be identified as a second-semester freshman from Holbrook, said the fight involved close to two dozen people -- some of them Suffolk students at the Ammerman Campus in Selden, some of them not students from the campus.

He said the victim was a student.

"The kid who was taken to the hospital was unconscious," the freshman witness said. "He was knocked out."

Araneo said she could not confirm the student's account or say whether non-students were involved.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
