LONG BEACH, N.Y. (WPIX)—There will be no charges against the Long Beach Police officer that ran over a sun bather on the beach.
The Nassau County Police vehicular reconstruction team has determined that it was just an accident.
The officer Paul DeMarco, a 27-year veteran, was on the beach in his police SUV.
Officials say he stopped to talk to his daughter who was also on the beach. As the officer pulled away, people began screaming for help.
"He saw some people waving that there might be a swimmer in distress and made the sharp right hand turn not seeing the unfortunate individual who was in a blind spot to his right side," Long Beach City Manager Charles Theofan, told PIX 11 News.
The sunbather 43-year-old Marshall Starkman is in stable condition and is recovering at Nassau University Medical Center with a broken neck and ribs.
Police officer Paul DeMarco was back on the job today.
