CENTEREACH, N.Y. (WPIX)
A Long Island man is in police custody after allegedly beating his dog and breaking its neck slowly causing the animal to suffocate, PIX 11 News has learned.
Edward Semke, 50, of Centereach, was arrested by Suffolk County SPCA Detectives for fatally beating his 7-month-old Bloodhound. After the dog died, authorities claim Semke dug a hole in the back yard and buried it.
A necropsy performed on the dog determined the broken neck caused the dog to slowly suffocate.
Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, said that Semke confessed to SPCA detectives that he hit and kicked the dog after it ran out of the back gate of the property. In addition, Semke gave investigators the permission to dig up the dog's corpse, which was taken to a local veterinarian where a necropsy was performed.
Gross is devastated at what took place.
"This was a horrible way for the bloodhound puppy to die," he said.
Semke is currently being held at the Suffolk County Police Department's 6th Precinct and is awaiting arraignment.
