September 12: Lauren Manning
At 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, Lauren Manning, a former managing director and partner at Cantor Fitzgerald, left for work. At 11:45 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2002--six months and four days later--she finally came home. Her return marked an incredible triumph: she had survived being burned on over 82 percent of her body in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, but it was just one of the first steps on the remarkable path to recovery she would follow over the next ten years. UNMEASURED STRENGTH (Henry Holt and Company/On Sale: August 30, 2011) chronicles her miraculous and inspiring journey to rebuild her life, her family, and her identity from the inside out.

Long before that infamous September morning, Manning learned the importance of perseverance, relentless hard work, and a deep faith in oneself. Her upbringing, and the work ethic and competitive spirit that brought her success in her career, provided the tools Manning would rely on during her lengthy recovery period. After emerging from a drug-induced coma of more than six weeks and enduring countless surgeries, she would spend her nights in the rehabilitation hospital devising ways to beat her injuries.

Manning was also buoyed by the support of her family, friends, and strangers. While her family kept vigil by her bedside, hundreds upon hundreds of letters began to arrive at the hospital from people around the word. As she scanned the gentle loops of handwriting from so many generous souls, she felt held and protected by this upwelling of support. She knew that she was gravely injured and that her body and life would never be the same, yet she felt happy because she understood how incredibly lucky she was to be alive.

UNMEASURED STRENGTH takes the reader from the lobby of the World Trade Center moments before the planes hit, all the way through today. Manning has recast her life after 9/11, not as a victim but as a survivor. Her transformation mentally and physically in the wake of such an unforeseen and drastic change shows us that the experience of life is so much more than the story of a single terrible day. Manning writes, "Every day you have a choice. Make it count." In the shadow of the burning towers, in her darkest moment, Manning decided to live, and resolved that she would see her son's face again. Courageous and inspiring, UNMEASURED STRENGTH tells the riveting story of her heroic effort to make that miracle--and so many others--possible.
