Alderman drops opposition to Chick-fil-A restaurant in Logan Square

Chicago 1st Ward Alderman Joe Moreno is dropping his fight against Chick-fil-A and is now endorsing a new restaurant in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Moreno had opposed the franchise opening a restaurant in his ward over the company president's anti-gay marriage stance.

He changed his mind after the company agreed to include a statement of respect for all sexual orientations and promised not to contribute money to groups that oppose gay marriage.

While Moreno calls it a "big win" company officials say they made nearly identical pledges in a Facebook post two months ago.

Anthony Martinez, executive director of The Civil Rights Agenda, said he would like even stronger measures taken.  “That they would adopt anti-discrimination policies at the corporate level that has sexual orientation and gender identity.  And additionally we’d like to see over time that they are adhering to the practice of welcoming the LGBT community and not discriminating.”
