BATON ROUGE - Louisiana's request for a second month
of disaster food stamp benefits for residents in 13 parishes
affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike has been denied.
Department of Social Services Interim Secretary Kristy Nichols
says they disagreed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
decision but encouraged residents to seek help through the state's
regular food stamp program.
The state asked for the extra time for residents in Acadia,
Allen, Beauregard, Jefferson Davis, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans,
Plaquemines, Sabine, St. Martin, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Vernon
Last month, the USDA approved the department's request for extra
benefits in seven parishes: Calcasieu, Cameron, Iberia, Jefferson,
St. Mary, Terrebonne and Vermilion.
