This week's New Orleans VooDoo Athlete of the Week has a bright future … and the present isn't bad either.
Archbishop Shaw sophomore quarterback Quentin Gibson had a banner night in the West Bank Optimist Jamboree. In two 15-minute games against John Ehret and Helen Cox, Gibson was 9 of 11 passing for 246 yards. He also threw touchdown passes of 3, 43, 66, and 73 yards.
Gibson said if you want to be the best, you have to model the best: "I really watch Peyton Manning a lot, my Dad's a Colts fan. Even though I live in New Orleans, I watch what he does, his throwing motion, his fakes, and I try to imitate my game off him, because Drew Brees is one of the best quarterbacks in the league."
Shaw head coach Scott Bairnsfather believes you have to run the football to be successful in the high school game, but this year, that philosophy may be tweaked.
"He`s got what is important for a high school quarterback," says Bairnsfather. "He's very accurate. The ball goes where he wants it go. His decision making his getting better and he's improving every day."
