The New Orleans Police Department calls "Operation Safe Summer" a success after 144 arrests.
The joint law enforcement effort included NOPD, Crimestoppers, U.S. Marshals, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Kenner Police Department, Louisiana Probation and Parole and the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Department started July 13th. It ended on July 20th.
According to NOPD, the arrests include a murder suspect, shooting suspects, armed robbery suspects, aggravated rape suspects and dozens of suspects who had violated parole.
During the operation, residents were asked to call Crimestoppers if they knew anything about any of the suspects. NOPD says if the tip led to an arrest, the caller was given a check for $500.
NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas says, “ It’s important to again point out the effectiveness of law enforcement having a strong partnership with the communities they serve. When the public steps up and gets involved, suspects are identified and arrests are made.”
