Former state Sen. Ken Hollis, who worked to keep the Saints in New Orleans and to bring state-sponsored property insurance to Louisiana, is dead at the age of 68.

His wife, Diane, says he died Friday morning of cancer. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

The Metairie Republican represented the Senate's 9th District for 26 years before term limits forced him out in 2007.

Hollis grew up born in Alexandria. His father was a car dealer.

Survivors include his wife, Diane, three sons and three stepdaughters.
