MANDEVILLE—This morning at 02:20 am, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a one vehicle fatality crash on U.S. 190 at the St. Tammany / Tangipahoa Parish line at milepost #234.8.
Benjamin J. Moreno, (W/M age 21) of Covington, LA, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 190 in a 2008 Honda Civic when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the centerline of the roadway. As the vehicle entered the westbound lane of U.S. 190, Moreno overcorrected back to the right causing the Civic to rotate clockwise as it crossed the eastbound lane and ran off road. Upon leaving the paved roadway, the Civic entered the tree line on the south side of U.S. 190 striking several trees before coming to rest.
Moreno sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office. He was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol use is unknown at this time with a toxicology test pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
Front passenger in the Honda Civic, Brandon Bennett (W/M age 20) of Mandeville, LA, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and received moderate injuries. The three rear seat passengers in the vehicle were unrestrained and received minor to serious injuries as a result of the crash. The rear occupants include: Jessica Moreno (W/F age 19) of Covington, LA with minor injuries, Amanda Breaux (W/F age 18) of Covington, LA with moderate injuries, and Robert Trevino (W/M age 20) of Covington, LA with serious injuries airlifted to University Hospital in New Orleans.
