NEW ORLEANS—An arraignment in a racketeering conspiracy case has been rescheduled for a former congressman's niece, who is in a hospital.
Angela Coleman, niece of former Rep. William Jefferson, was due in court last Wednesday to be arraigned on a new indictment.
Her lawyer said she is expected to have triple bypass surgery this week.
A judge rescheduled Coleman's arraignment for Jan. 11. A trial is scheduled to start Jan. 25.
Also charged in the case are Coleman's mother, New Orleans tax assessor Betty Jefferson; her uncle, political operative Mose Jefferson; and
former state Rep. Renee Gill Pratt. They are accused of conspiring to pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars in government grant money.
