Residents in what's usually a quiet neighborhood are now on alert. This after a brazen burglar breaks in to two homes in the wee hours of the night. WGNO’s Vanessa Bolano has more from Lakeshore.
Manicured lawns, picturesque holiday decorations, and security signs; you'd think this quiet Lakeshore neighborhood would be the last stop for a burglar.
“We heard the noise. We didn't know what was going on so we jumped out of bed, one took the front door, one took the back door and that's where it was, but I didn't see anybody when I got there because they already took what they wanted and left,” says carol Vaidee.
At 3:30am Tuesday Vadiee's home on Crystal Street was burglarized. One man busted in through the back door.
“It sounded like a gunshot going off!”
He took a wallet, cash, and credit cards, but apparently wanted more. Less than an hour later the burglar zeroed in on another house on Amethyst Street. Residents here were startled by the alarm, but police say the burglar wasn't fazed.
Lt. Kim Williams with the NOPD says, “He was still adamant about getting whatever property he saw through the window that he wanted.”
Neighbor Any Ruggles says, “They were sleeping, all the kids were sleeping upstairs and someone came, whoever the robber came and cut the window.”
Ruggles says he cut the window, removed a glass pane, and eventually got in through the kitchen. Tonight she clears their front door hoping to hide anything that may tempt a crook. Amy says the burglar used an alley that connects both streets to hit up her friends house. She is moving into the neighborhood, but she says now her plans are on hold.
“I'm not moving in until we have curtains and blinds so they can't see in.”
Police are telling everyone to keep their blinds closed regardless of where you live. No one ever came face to face with the burglar, but he was spotted running away on foot.At this time police have no suspects.
