Allergy season is upon us and in New Orleans you've probably noticed. A new report by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America ranks The Big Easy as being the 14th worst city in the nation for allergies.
"People always aks when the move to New Orleans, why they are allergic. There are so many allergies here and the main reason is the weather. The heat and humidity," Dr. Larry Montelibano, and allergy doctor at Ochsner said.
Dr. Montelibano said one of the most difficult thing for his patients is telling the difference between allergies and a common cold.
"A cold will go away in a week. If you have multiple symptoms for multiple weeks then I'd be more concerned that it's allergies."
Dr. Montelibano said there are many over the counter medicines like Zyrtec and Claritin which help with the allergy blues. For chronic sufferers he suggests considering nasal sprays or shots.
According to the report, the Top 5 cities with the worst allergies are:
1. Knoxville, TN
2. McAllen, TX
3. Louisville, KY
4. Jackson, MS
5. Wichita, KS
