Home-grown broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, turnips and kale are tasty, nutritious crops that are easy to grow once their basic cultural requirements are met. All cole crops perform best in a fertile soil with moderate levels of organic matter and a pH around 6.5 or so. Plants need a fair amount of calcium, and that element will be supplied when limestone is used to raise the soil pH to the preferred level. In general, brassicas prefer cooler spring and fall temperatures, but with a heavy mulch of pesticide-free grass clippings or shredded leaves to keep the soil moist, I've kept many of these brassicas growing well even in hot weather.
