Cave Spring will host Brookville Saturday at 1 o'clock. It's been quite a year for the 9-3 Knights and head coach Tim Fulton, who suffered tight losses to Salem and Hidden Valley, and even lost starting quarterback Reece Kingery to an injury for a spell late in the season.
But they didn't miss a beat with Tony Simmons under center, and now Kingery has returned to the lineup for a team that seems to be peaking at just the right time.
"I think we have a group of young men who have really come together," coach Fulton said. "We've been preaching team all year long and they believe in each other and they believe that they belong and that they can compete. We had some young men do a great job, not only while Reece was out but while John Evans was out and Jack Woody was out. We had a bunch of young men step in and play very well. It provided us an opportunity to establish some depth.
"I think we are playing with a sense of urgency now because we understand that not everyone is gonna be able to start," said tailback Sam Wright. "The backups need to know their role and to be able to perform just as well as the starters were slated to perform in their positions."
Wright and his teammates rolled up more than 400 yards of offense in an impressive 35-21 win at Richlands a week ago, no easy task, and they expect an equal if not tougher challenge this week in unbeaten Brookville, a team that allows just 8 points per game.
"They play very solid defense," Fulton said. "They are very aggressive. You can't say enough good things about them. They are well coached, and they just do a good job over there."
Said Wright: "There's Korren Kirven up there, the defensive lineman. He's someone that's gonna be playing somewhere next year. We've just gotta make sure we get him taken care of and all the other playmakers on defense. I'm glad this is my last game at Bogle. No matter what it's gonna be hosting a state semifinal game. I'm excited to see all the fans out there. Hopefully, it's gonna be some pretty nice weather and not snow again, but I'm excited for this opportunity."
