Carraway Closing Doors

Carraway Hospital in Birmingham is closing its doors after 100 years of operation. Hospital officials say they will begin shutting down departments immediately. Officials are in the process of working with other hospitals to transfer patients. For the last few weeks, city leaders and hospital executives have been meeting to explore option on how to keep the hospital afloat. In a statement released Monday morning, Carraway officials said, "Time and declining patient volumes did not permit it to Microsoft Word 11" name="Originator" /> capitalize on these opportunities..." The hospital will close as soon as October 31st.

Decatur Hospital Discontinues Cardiovascular Program

Decatur General Hospital is ending its cardiovascular surgery program. Funding problems doomed the program. Decatur's hospital will still provide diagnostic and cardiology services.

Hyundai Moves to Four Day Work Week

Financial concerns linked to the shaky economy force changes at Alabama's Hyundai plant. Hyundai is shifting to a four day work week, which will continue for the rest of the year. This means 11, 000 fewer cars will be made. The plant opened in 2005 and produces the Sonata sedan and Santa Fe SUV.

City Council Proposes Pay Raise

The Birmingham City Council is scheduled to consider a pay raise proposal Tuesday. The proposal would more than double council member pay. The proposed increase would raise council pay $30,000 to $55, 0000 a year. If it is approved, the pay raise would take affect after next year's council elections.

Columbiana Mayoral Recount

A recount is now scheduled for Tuesday morning in the Columbiana mayor's race. Challenger Gregg Rushton called for the recount. Rushton came up five votes short of unseating incumbent Mayor Allan Lowe after provisional ballots were counted last week. Rushton will pay $1,200 to have the recount done.

Bright Receives Major Endorsement

Democratic congressional candidate Bobby Bright picked up a key endorsement Monday from a Republican. State Senator Harri Anne Smith endorsed the for Montgomery mayor.

Smith crossed party lines to support Bright who is running against Smith's fellow State Senator Jay Love. Love and Bright are facing off in the second congressional district race.

Fatal Fire Victims Identified

Counselors will be available at North Jefferson Middle School Monday to comfort students who lost a classmate in a house fire. Fourteen-year-old Micah Shane Edwards and his grandmother, Juanita Sue Calvert, were killed Friday. Sheriff deputies say the mother and son were trapped inside the mobile home in Trafford. No word yet on what caused the blaze.

Man Rescued From Burning House in Homewood

A man was rescued from a burning house on Sunday afternoon. The fire happened in the 1600 block of 27th Street South in Homewood. Witnesses say the fire started while the man was inside the home checking on it for a friend. They say it was the quick thinking of Timothy Tye, the man who rescued the victim, that saved his life. The victim went to the hospital but no word on his condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tuscaloosa Shooting Investigation

Tuscaloosa Police are searching for a third suspect in an overnight shooting. It happened at an apartment at Regency Oaks. Police say three men with guns forced their way into the apartment. A man and woman were inside and they exchanged shots with the suspects. The gunmen ran away. Charges are pending over what police call a drug related shooting.

Cold Case Jury Selection

Jury selection is expected to begin Monday afternoon in a Birmingham cold case murder. Newlyn Henley is charged with capital murder. It is for Bobby Monder's killing nearly five year ago apparently over money lost during a card game. Henley was arrested in 2007 after investigators say witnesses came forward with new evidence.
