Birmingham mayor Larry Langford says he will not sign a proclamation recognizing a gay pride day and will not allow the group Central Alabama Pride to put up banners in the city right of way during it's Pride parade on June 7th.

Mayor Langford said in a phone interview "there was a prepared proclamation made up by the group ordering me to proclaim gay pride day or whatever that day is, now first of all I resent the fact that they took the liberty to even draw up a proclamation".

Jonathan Quinn from Central Alabama Pride says the group has filed the proper paperwork with the police department in order to hold the parade.

Mayor Langford says it's the police department that issues permits for parades, not his office.

Langford also said "what they are doing now is trying to manipulate the press for reasons to get publicity for their event, they didn't have to do that, they could have just held their event and not drawn me into it".
